Adidas Announces New Smartwatch

By Vasim

Smartwatch segment seems to be getting increasingly competitive. Latest company to join the fray is Adidas. The list of wearables in the sports fitness space keeps growing. Adidas has taken the wraps off its a new fitness smartwatch during GigaOm's Mobilized conference in San Francisco, telling attendees it will be made available for $399 (£250) on 1 November.

A watch with a colour touchscreen and built-in heart monitor that studies the wearer's pulse to create training programmes has been unveiled by Adidas. The smartwatch will be designed with the help of Fjord, a design company acquired by Accenture earlier this year.

Primarily aimed at runners, the smartwatch will have GPS to track a user's workout. The device can also provide personalised coaching based on a user's heart rate that can be measured with the built-in heart rate sensor. Unlike most other smartwatches, the device does not need the primary support of a smartphone for functioning. However, this also means unlike its most competitors, Addidas smartwatch lacks the ability to receive notifications for incoming calls and text messages.

Adidas says its smartwatch will be able to track a user's pulse through their wrist, providing details about their workout with the help of motion sensors. Unlike other fitness bands, Adidas's take doesn't want to integrate solely with a mobile device over Bluetooth 4.0, instead the smartwatch's screen will dole out information on its own. A GPS will be found, tracking routes to measure your speed and distance.
